Writer – Cary Bates
Artist – Mike Grell / Bob Wiacek
Editor – Murray Boltinoff, Jack Harris
Reprinted – Legion of Super-Heroes Archive 12 – 2003
Comment – The Problem with Dream Girl: Dream Girl’s ability to accurately predict the future is problematic for the Legion. If she predicts a disaster, the Legionnaires immediately jump up and try to stop it, knowing that they can’t. The best they can hope for is an alternative interpretation of the dream. Or that damned self-fulfilling prophecy rears its ugly head and we discover that the event in question never would have happened if the Legion hadn’t shown up to cause it. That explains why there are so many people claiming to be their own grandparent.
The best handling of Dream Girl came years later when she learned to “dream on command” and became an excellent hand-to-hand fighter. She could predict her opponent’s punches and block them. All without mussing her hair.

Comments – We’ll be climbing up on our soapbox, so if you have a low threshold for sermons, you might want to go to the bathroom now, and come back later in the post.
It was 1976. There were a very few Black superheroes in mainstream comics, and only a handful of Black supporting characters. American Indian heroes had been fairly common, but only in the western comics, which were dying out. Asian characters were usually villains. And I can recall no heroes hailing from Central America. Even Karate Kid, who had been a Legionnaire for many years, had only recently started becoming half-Asian. So a Black Legionnaire was overdue.
As a 24-year-old peace and love activist, I has disappointed with the introduction of Tyroc.
First, he wore a ridiculous costume. He looked like he stepped right from a discotheque. His silver/white suit had no sleeves and no pants, and no front. It was a big collar across his shoulder-blades attached to suspenders attached to a Speedo near his navel. It was accessorized with three rows of chains across his chest. And of course, he sported a huge Afro hair style. It struck me that the two characters with the darkest skin, Tyroc and Shadow Lass, wore the skimpiest costume to show off the most flesh. I must admit that a fellow comic book fan and classmate from Jamaica told me I was just expressing “Colonial Guilt”.
Second, the racists in the story were the citizens of Marzal. They were close-minded by refusing to join the diversified United Planets society. It wasn’t until later that it was revealed that the island disappeared for 200 years at a time, so the Marzalians were a bit behind the times.
Third, he had a super-power that was hard to understand and harder to integrate in a team book. He didn’t fight, he yelled (with big, colorful visual effects like EEEOOORR). His shouts could alter reality in limitless manners. He could do anything. And a hero that can do anything doesn’t need 20 losers hanging around with him. Which meant that he would be relegated to off-panel missions with Chemical King.
So, what good did it do to break ground with a Black character that who’s appearance was somewhere between a joke and an insult and who rarely was written into stories? At least, he didn’t have a French accent.

Who Came First?

In Adventure Comics 247 (Index 1001), published in 1958, the Legion of Super Heroes was introduced in a Superboy story. Three youths from the future travel to Smallville to meet their hero, to invite him to visit the future, and to join their little club.

The business model for the comic book industry at this time was,
1. produce a good story,
2. sell it for a dime,
3. if enough people like it, do it again next month.

Mort Weisinger, editor of the Superman family of comic books, knew rune number three very well. He knew that kids, his demographic, would tire of his heroes fighting bank robbers, so he introduced elements of fantasy and science fiction into his stories. (Granted, he was certainly not the first to do this, but we like him.) And when the Legion of Super Heroes proved to be a hit, he brought them back, not only in Superboy, but also in Superman, Supergirl, Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane stories.

One such appearance was Action 276 (Index 1006). In this Supergirl story, three youths from the future travel to Stanhope College to meet their heroine, to invite her to visit the future, and to join their little club. When this story was produced, there was a wrench thrown into the works. Brainiac 5 was an applicant for membership along with Supergirl. But, in the inaugural story, Brainy was shown as a background character, presumably already a member.

How did this happen? Something like this . . .

1. The Legion was a hit;
2. It was time to extend the brand;
3. The Legion was introduced to Superman and Luthor;
4. Two ideas formed, bring Supergirl into the fold, and introduce Superman’s other arch-villian, Brainiac, to the mythos through a 30th century descendent.

Did Mort and the boys recognize that someone who looked like their “Brainiac 5” was drawn in the earlier story? Was Brainy drawn in the first story to be revealed later at the inventor of the time bubble? Did they think anyone would notice? Did they care? Who knows?

This was the beginning of comic collecting and the continuity cops. Creators were just getting used to the idea that comic readers were referring to back issues looking for mistakes. Some eagle-eyed fans noticed the inconsistency and an explanation was formed. The Legion visited Supergirl first, as a kind of trial run, then visited Superboy. This caused more problems. If the Legion was formed upon the legend of Superboy, later Superman, why not visit him first? That went unanswered until years later when Brainaic 5 admitted that he built the time bubble to meet his cross-temporal crush, Supergirl.

Finally, after nearly 50 years, Paul Levitz has introduced a new concept to explain away all continuity bumps that trouble our minds – Chronicler’s Error. According to LEvitz, we were wrong back in the old days. Perhaps our time-viewers were defective. His retelling of the early years in his recent run on Adventure Comics is smoothing out those bunps .

So who came first?
1. Brainaic 5
2. Superboy
3. Supergirl

At least for a while. . .

Sone of these outfits have been used in the Superboy run. But in this issue, a costume designed for Duo Damsel earned a writing credit for Nick Pascale. Nick’s costume was half purple, half orange, which became separate purple and orange outfits where she used her power. Cary Bates made the costume the feature of the story, and named the planet Pasnic.

Tribute to Mort Weisinger

Many people who comment of the history of the Legion of Super-Heroes franchise (myself included) have been critical of Mort Weisinger. The early stories were fairly silly. The characters were saddled with the "Boy" and "Girl" names. The Planetary Chance Machine, the Substitute Heroes, and the Super-Pets are all concepts that have been ridiculed over the years.

But, without Mort, we night not even have the Legion of Super-Heroes. He gave the idea a shot. He brought them back and integrated them throughout the Superman family of comics. He bounced the Bizarros to give them their own series in Adventure, and he gave them a home in Action when Supergirl took their spot.

After a long career in publishing, Mort was promoted to a vice-president in 1970 and he died in 1978. But many of his creations live on. Thank you, Mort. If not for you, we would have been reading Final Crisis: Bizarros of 2-1/2 Worlds.

Read his bio in Wikipedia.

Comments – While I have always been an apologist for comic book creators and editors from the Golden and Silver Ages, and while I always felt that Superboy (and Supergirl) were not necessary as Legion members, this was a bad story. Your benefactor is the richest person around. He was armies of lawyers just keeping track of the billable time of the other armies of lawyers. They could get you an exception.

I am still double-checking, but I believe that this is the first Legion story title that didn't end with an exclamation point!
