Comment – Dream Girl is elected as leader? Dream Girl was introduced as a strategic genius who masterminded the disbanding of the Legion so she alone could face a terrible menace that she foresaw. She also was a scientific genius who could transform Lightning Lass’s abilities.
Then she was left in the background; brought out when ever they needed a plot twist. She became a bit of a “dumb blonde” with nightmares.
As Legion leader, she is written an organizational genius, playing off her ditzy demeanor to become a strong and effective leader.
I am trying to discover if this was a fan vote or a decision by Levitz, but eigher way, he turned it into a genius move.

Comment – This story is the first installment or what would become known as t"The Great Darkness Saga". This extended story has sttood up well over the years and has been recently reprinted in a deluxe hardcover edition.
DC had been critized by fans the majority of Legion members and friends were white humans in a supposedly fully integrated 30th century society. So in this story, the crew changes one of their few unique looking characters (Timber Wolf) and writes-out their only member of African descent (Tyroc).
In addition, Karate Kid, who is occasionally, partially Asian, and Princess Projectra are put on leave and Bouncing Boy (the Legion’s only fluffy* character) and Duo Dansel become reservists.
Also, Dr. Gymll, the inspiration for television’s Dr. Gregory House, in introduced.

Superboy/Ultra Boy travelled to the 30the century, where Saturn Girl’s post-hypnotic suggestion kicked in, telling Superboy not to enter future. In this confusion, he developed the Reflecto identity. With the help of Insect Queen, the Legion turns the Time Trapper’s weapon on him and he dematerializes.

With Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes 258, we wrap up the first sub-reality in the long history of the Legion. We have divided the history of the Legion into 5 major realities and a number of sub-realities. The divisions are not necessarily based on the storylines, but how the various creative teams treated the teams.

For example, in reality 1.0, Superboy was the star. He appeared in almost all issues and on almost all covers. In Adventure 344 (Index 1065) Superboy played a small part in the story, but the creators got him on the cover by having some other hero impersonate him. By 1979, the Legion was popular enough to succeed without him, so Superboy was written out (for a while) and received his own book again.

The following is our summary of the various realities that Legion creators have presented for us. This will probably generate some comments and controversy. We certainly hope so. As we run through the history of the Legion in this blog, we will expand on the reasoning behind this summary. And as we progress, there may be changes in that reasoning.

Another example, the current iteration of the Legion by Paul Levitz has been described as a return to a the original pre-crisis time line, with the inconsistencies explained away as “chroniclers’ error”. We have chosen to portray the current stories as a part of a fifth reality that closely resembles the original.

1.0 - Superboy and the Super Hero Club
Adventure Comics 247 (1958) through Legion of Super Heroes v2 258
Created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, the Legion was introduced as a part of the Superman editorial family. Taken over by Most Weisinger as editor, the Legion were frequent guest stars in Superman, Superboy, Action, Adventure, Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane, until they landed in Adventure. The Legion combined heroic characters who were close in age to their readers with science-fiction storylines. Teenaged Jim Shooter brought a new level of characterization to the book. And Paul Levitz introduced multi-issue, multi-level plotlines. Early stories were written as disposable literature. Plot inconsistencies abounded because no one believed that readers would actually save these 12-cent gems.

Fans did much to assemble the history of the Legion in the letter columns and in the amateur publications they circulated among themselves. Fans also suggested new members, and many future creators came up from the ranks of Legion fans of this period.

Superboy was the main character and was featured in every issue and on nearly every cover. But to explain away plot holes, it was stated that Supergirl joined before Superboy as some kind of test run.

Comment – As we all know, the Legion first appeared in Adventure Comics 247. This story was published in Superboy and the Legion of Super Heroes 247. By DC’s reckoning, this story is also the 247th story to feature the Legion. What a coincidence! By my calculations, this in only story number 229. Since I arbitrarily count only stories that advance the lore of the Legion, I have not included many Legion cameos from various Superman family books. I did include a number of Karate Kid stories that did not co-star the Legion (Hence the term “arbitrary” ). I have attempted to reconcile the DC numbering with mine, as well as with Legion Wiki and Legion Outpost II, to no avail.
This story was dedicated to Mort Weisinger, the first editor and major creative force of the Legion of Super Heroes. Without Mort, we might not have read 7 Legion stories, so numbers be damned , , , Long Live the Legion . . . and Mort.

About 50 copies were distributed in the DC offices and sent to the US Copywight Office and the the Overstreet price guide for purposes of estavblishing a copyrights. Apparently, a nuclear exchange in 1978 caused his future / their past to change. After the wedding, he leads a group of Legionnaires to the past to rechange history. They all face off against the Time Trapper at the end of time.

Comment – This was a tabloid-sized book. It featured a two-page spread of the big wedding with all the Legionnaires and the Subs pictured. It also included Duplicate Boy from Lallor, the Martian Manhunter, Paul Levitz, Mike Grell and a character from the John Carter of Mars series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This implies that J’onn J’onzz survived into the 30th century. In fact, later issues will suggest that he is actually R. J. Brande in one of the Legion’s incarnations.
The “Origins and Powers” feature from his book is reprinted in the 2009 collection, Legion of Super Heroes – 1,050 Years of the Future.
This edition has been panned by much of fandom over the years, mostly because it won’t fit in a long box, and although it does feature the type of time travel story that I hate, I treasure this issue for the art. The larger format allowed Grell and Colletta to pull out all of the stops with numerous sweeping panaramas. It’s hard to find, but worth searching for.

Comment – Fans have attempted to identify the time frame of the Legionnaires in this story by their costumes and their flight rings, placing this tale immediately after Adventure 329 (index number 1049). But the concept of “Chronicler’s Error” introduced into the Legion mythos by Paul Levitz tells us that flight rings were available to the Legionnaires from the start, therefore this story could be inserted almost anywhere in the early Legion chronology.
