The problem with Superboy – Superboy and Mon-el (and often Ultra Boy) were often written out of stories to make it more difficult for the Legionnaires to accomplish their tasks. But, accommodations had to be made to include Superboy on the cover. In this case, a unnamed Durlan hero deiguised himself as Superboy to help some friends escape. He is frozen in that form by a energy blast, so that when he attempts his excape, everyone who was not paying attention (or only looked at the cover) thinks that Superboy is dead.

Interesting about the letter column suggestions, that's something I miss out on having mostly the Showcase reprints of LoSH from these years.
