Cover – Neal Adams / Neal Adams
Editor – Mort Weisinger
Reprinted – Legion of Super-Heroes Archive 7 – 1997
Showcase Presents the Legion of Super-Heroes 3 - 2009
Comments – As characterization become more important in comics, the Legionnaires started to develop individual personalities. Shadow Lass will become the Legion’s “bad girl”. She joins in order to be near Brainiac. She will later start flirting with Mon-El, and she will become increasingly hard to get along with. We also see Saturn Girl turn into “Iron Butt” Imra; Princess Projectra becomes regal and a bit haughty; Dream Girl will be depicted and obsessed with her looks, and Duo Damsel will suffer from a unrequited love for Superboy.
Also, this two parter had great art. You can’t beat Neal Adams on the cover and Swan and Klein on the inside.

Cover – Neal Adams / Neal Adams
Editor – Mort Weisinger
Reprinted – Legion of Super-Heroes Archive 7 – 1997
Showcase Presents the Legion of Super-Heroes 3 - 2009
Comments – This is one of the best of the Shooter Era. It is a good adventure / mystery story, with a handful of characters overcoming difficult challenges, as a group and singly as they escape from some ingenious death traps. The big reveal that the Fatal Five is behind everything occurs about three-quarters through the story, leading to a cliff-hanger. But it is given away on the cover. I have never seen any evidence to support this, but I believe that the cover and title were added after the story was written and drawn. I can’t believe that anyone would create such a mystery and then spoil it on the cover.

Comments – “If Chameleon Boy can look like anything or anyone, why doesn’t he change into something normal, and get rid of the antennas?”
This was a common question in the sixties in our little comic book club, and with this issue we received the answer; he uses the antenna to scan images of people, places and things to change into. Of course, we didn’t understand that a Durlan might be proud to look like a Durlan. It would be years later that we discovered that Durlans do not naturally look like this.

Comments – “If not for that goody-goody brat, I’d have won.” – Universo. Did that line inspire Hanna and Barberra to create . . .
“Scooby Doo and the Perilous President”, starring Saturn Girl as Velma, Dream Girl as Daphne, Lightning Lad as Freddy, Matter-Eater Lad as Shaggy, and (wait for it) Timber Wolf starring as Scooby Doo
This two-parter remains my favorite story of the sixties.

Comments – Don’t take the elevated transportation systems if you visit 30th century Metropolis. The old president died when his car pumped off the roadway, and the Legionnaires are busted while rescuing a number of monorail cars, which they also had to do years later as adults (Adventure 354).

Comments – Paul Levitz has recently been quoted saying that he enjoys working on the Legion because it is set in the future and he doesn’t have to get involved in the rest of the present-day DC universe. Not so in the Weisinger era. Mort Weisinger edited all of the Superman books, and liked to have characters cross over from book to book. That explains the frequent appearances of Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Lois Lane, and even Lex Luthor’s and Mr. Mxyzpltk’s multi-great-grandsons.

Comments – Over the years, I have never seen any interview with Shooter or any other staff member that confirms that Ferro Lad was introduced in Adventure 346 just to be killed seven issues later. His death was even foretold by the Hag in Adventure 350. But don’t be sad, Ferro Lad will maintain a long lasting presence in Legion lore for many years.

Cover – Curt Swan / George Klein
Editor – Mort Weisinger
Reprinted – Legion of Super-Heroes Archive 5 – 1994

Comments – In my humble opinion, this is the book in which Shooter, the boy wonder, came into his own as a writer. Each character has a solo adventure with plenty of action (even Saturn Girl). It was only within the last few years that I learned that Shooter drew basic layouts for his scripts, that would be used to prepare the finished art. His first two stories (Adventure 346 and 347) seemed very simplistic in design, but they quickly improved.

Comments – Much like the Klingons, over time the Khunds got a lot uglier. Shooter was later quoted that he created Karate Kid and Ferro Lad to provide more action in the stories since so many of the Legionnaires simply stood and pointed.

Comments – Fellow prisoners, Plant Lad, Weight Wizard and Blockade Boy were suggested by letter column contributors.
The problem with Superboy – Superboy and Mon-el (and often Ultra Boy) were often written out of stories to make it more difficult for the Legionnaires to accomplish their tasks. But, accommodations had to be made to include Superboy on the cover. In this case, a unnamed Durlan hero deiguised himself as Superboy to help some friends escape. He is frozen in that form by a energy blast, so that when he attempts his excape, everyone who was not paying attention (or only looked at the cover) thinks that Superboy is dead.
